A Resource About Allergy Medications
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have stated many times in this column that I believe that you bear a
part of the responsibility for your own care, that you must seek information
about the medications you take, their effects as well as the possible side
effects that can occur. It is not always easy to find that information, I
know, but the booklet described today will help in many common situations. It
is called "Consumers Guide to Allergy Medications" and contains a description
of the actions of many of the medications you now may be using to treat your
sniffles. The booklet is obtained by sending a stamped, self-addressed
envelope with your request to Fisons Corporation, P.O. Box 1766, Dept. FD,
Rochester, NY 14603, or calling the Asthma and Allergy Information Center and
Hotline, 1-800-727-5400 to ask for your copy. The brochure contains two very
complete charts, one for Over-the-Counter Medications, and one for
Prescription Medications and Therapy, which list the medications by
classifications, describe their actions, provide you with an indication of the
results you may expect and also list the potential side effects of each class
of medication. If you obtain this booklet, and share it with your physician
when the time comes that you need such medication, you may gain a much clearer
understanding of the medication prescribed for you and its effects and
actions.
